The Fiesta Mayor of Granada - June 2011

There are any number of reasons to go to Granada: Because its picturesque location nestled against the Sierra Nevada provides the perfect panorama for one of Spain's most magnificent buildings - the Alhambra. Because it's old world feel is still alive and well in the winding streets of the Albaicin and the old silk market. Because going for tapas in Granada is a cultural experience on par with any other.

It is the Corpus Festival, Granada's fiesta mayor, and the city will be electric with the energy and movement of the goings-on. Organic wine and what makes Penedes perfect for Cava

On Sunday morning I met the Wagers at their hotel and we headed down to the Penedes region for a morning of wine history and visits. As we drove down the sun, which had been curiously absent over the past week, began to peak out from behind the clouds, illuminating the leafy vineyards which hold the promise of another vintage of wine that will be ready at harvest time.

We got to Albet i Noya and began Ana welcomed us to the property. The visit to the winery, Spain's first organic winery and still a leading voice in the push for ecological and organic products, was very informative as Ana explained how and why they operate at the winery, and what exactly it is that makes them unique. The tasting was a success as well with both the red and whites on excellent form, and we headed to Sant Sadurni contented by the visit and warmed by the sun.

At Rimarts, Ricard explained how the landscape and geology of the region make it perfect for the rigorous demands of the cava grapes before he took us through their hand-crafted process, the same one used by his grandfather and father before. Finally we were treated to a sampling of some of the finest cavas from their rich reserve. It was a fully enjoyable and informative day, and both wineries helped to show that hospitality and attention that are so much a part of this great culture.

Collserola - walking trails on top of Barcelona

Another of the frequently overlooked jewels of Barcelona is the Collserola mountain range that hems in the city to the west. The Tibidabo amusement park and Sagrada Cor Church that sit more than half a kilometer over the city provide unparalleled panoramas of the city, and Norman Foster's communication tower stands close by as well. Alella - A Little town with a lot to offer

Pamplona and San Fermin

Pamplona is a modern, welcoming city with vestiges of its medieval past throughout the town providing visitors a glimpse into a fascinating culture. This culture can be lived and seen in the culture, people and gastronomy of the region.

As the capital of the region of Navarra, and as a key stopping point along the Camino de Santiago, it has been receiving pilgrims at the Magdalena gate for centuries. That makes the gate an ideal starting point for any visit, where you can discover and explore the city walls. Visiting the city takes you to the XII-century Santa Maria la Real Cathedral, with its neoclasiccal facade and French-style gothic cloister. Festival Weekend in Catalonia

The first weekend in June is a very popular time of year throughout Spain for festivals and fairs of all sorts. Within a short radius of Barcelona this weekend you can find some truly worthwhile spectacles, and we'd like to highlight two of them:

The Medieval Fair in La Seu D'Urgell: What better setting for a medieval fair than a medieval city? Experience life as it was 1000 years ago, with local products, displays of the same handcrafted systems that were used in the middle ages, as well as street performances and live music. It promises to be a unique and unforgettable experience.

The Drummer boy Festival (Festa del Timbaler) in Bruc, at the foot of Montserrat Mountain. The real life history of the drummer boy who on June 6, 1808 scared off the invading French army has become one of the most popular legends of all of Catalonia (they even made a film about it last year).  This weekend the town of Bruc celebrates the 203 anniversary of the event throughout the whole town. Txocos - Basque cooking clubs

In the world of gastronomy, very few regions worldwide can compete with the richness and diversity of the Basque country cooking. And part of that secret, according to some of the top chefs like 3-michelin starred Juan Mari Arzak, is the secretive world of the "Txocos", a traditional club where men (and more recently women) meet to cook and share the spoils of their labors. The word "Txoco" comes from the Basque word for a corner or small space.

It's an interesting phenomenon for several reasons: first of all, until recently it was almost entirely a men's club, but not your typical men's club for playing cards, soccer, smoking cigars, etc, oh no: it is a cooking club. And secondly, the members actually do the cooking. They don't meet to watch someone else cook; they cook. And then they eat. And the result can be seen in the sheer number of restaurants and eating establishments in the area, which numbers more than 15,000!

If you get the chance to visit the Basque country, you probably won't get the chance to sit in on one of these clubs, but you will get the chance to sample the wonderful fruits of the labor of generations of cooks.

Digging deeper into Spain´s History

Castles, Churches and Mosques are found throughout Spain. Palau Guell Reopens today in Barcelona

Museum Night in Barcelona - Art and Culture for Free!

May 18 is the International Day of the Museum, and the folks in Barcelona are getting a head start on the festivities. On Saturday May 15, 2011, Barcelona is celebrating by opening up many of its best museums to the public free of charge! The Boqueria Market, Barcelona

Throughout our years of guiding people through the beautiful cities of Spain one of the principle attractions, for both Spanish people and visitors, has been the markets, both open-air and enclosed. Perhaps, unconsciously, behind this seemingly simple concept of buying/selling local products there is something more? An unending number of stories await us at the doors of these places, waiting for you to discover them for yourself.

When a person visits the Boqueria Market for the first time, the overwhelming sensation is almost always the same: fascination. This is, after all, one of the most storied and emblematic markets in all of Spain.

Just like any old market, the Boqueria began as an open air market in the middle of the street. The current version was born along what is now the most-famous street in Barcelona, La Rambla. Around 1830 the traders moved to its current location. The migration was gradual, making it difficult to name the exact year of its inception. Adding to the difficulty is the fact that the market was around a hundred years before La Rambla.

The market’s entrance tells us a lot about the history of the market. Hanging over the entrance is the full name of the market: “St Josep. La Boqueria.” The first part tells us that the current location of the market was, centuries ago, a convent. Specifically the convent of St. Josep. The second part, “La Boqueria” means butcher’s or meat-cutting table.

There are many stories surrounding the market, and the anectdotes and legends have, with the passing of time, become as much a part of the market as the colorful stalls and lively atmosphere.

The Transcantábrico: the Spanish "Orient Express"

Yesterday we introduced you to the Val d'Aran (in the Pyrenees mountains) as an idea for your summer vacation. Today we want to show you the enchants of a route by the luxorious train named as "Transcantábrico". The train is a 2011 innovation and goes along the path between Santiago de Compostela and León, in both directions. It runs from May to December. It is an interesting way to discover during 8 days Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country.

Val d'Aran, in the heart of the Pyrenees

It is time to think about your summer vacation! In the next few days we want to give you some ideas to enjoy them and, at the same time, to discover some great places in Spain during the hottest months of the year.

Today I want to introduce you to the "Val d'Aran", a beautiful region of the Catalan Pyrenees. One of the best regions to discover during June, July and August is the north of Spain because the weather is still warm during the daytime and cooler during the nighttime. It is a perfect place to ski during winter and to hike during the rest of the year. You can find well indicated routes all throughout the region that you can hike, drive, bike or ride a horse while enjoying the medieval heritage of churches and towns as Salardú. Montblanc - city of kings and legends in wine country

Founded in 1163 by King Alfons I, Montblanc is a town where history and legends meet. Surrounded by a 14th century wall, it is where, according to tradition, Saint George fought the dragon (you can even enter into the city from the gate where the fight took place). The collection of medieval churches and other buildings make the whole town a historical monument. The buildings were constructed during the time when the city was one of the major administration centers of the Catalan empire, and the walls (which run almost a mile in circumference around the city) are a testament to its past glories. As if all of this were not enough, Montblanc is also located in the heart of the Conca de Barbera wine region, and is a short drive from the Priorat, Montsat and Penedes regions as well.

Las Cruces de Mayo - Welcome to May - Spanish style

Just when you thought you had missed your chance to see the parades and processions after Semana Santa, this weekend brings us the lower-keyed Fiesta de Las Cruces (Festival of the Crosses). The day of Las Cruces is technically May 3, but around Spain the festivities will take place all weekend. As the name suggest, the origins of the celebration lies in a mixture of religion and legend, and according to legend dates back to the Roman emperor Constantine, who saw a giant cross in a dream as a way to defeat the enemy army.

Sant Jordi 2011 - flowers and books for all

2011 is a year unlike others in recent memory for those who are in the Barcelona area. Semana Santa coincides with the other major holiday of the city, Sant Jordi. On April 23rd the streets of the Catalan capital will fill up with book stands (complete with authors signing books) and roses. The celebration flows into the markets, where the sellers will be giving out roses to their female clients. It's a wonderful event that takes place thoruhgout Catalonia, and the perfect time to see and take part in local culture, and this year it has the triple benefit of being on a Saturday as well as during Semana Santa.

The Best place for a break in Valencia - Avenida de la Horchata

The springtime sun has reawakened a desire for that uniquely Valencian drink, Orxata (Horchata in Spanish).  Orxata (legend says it came from king exclaiming that it was like drinking gold "Or" in Catalan) is a cold drink made from tiger nut milk and sugar. It is traditionally served with "Fartones", a sweet pastry which is great dipped into the orxata or eaten alone. For the best Orxata, head up to the Alboraya area in Valencia and visit the Orxata Avenue and experience this gastronomical wonder for yourself!

Semana Santa 2011 - The tradition of the robes

This year's edition of Semana Santa falls much later than usual, which means that the temperatures will be milder (one might even suggest downright warm) for much of the week, and the celebrations are in full swing. By now many people are familiar with the idea of the various brotherhoods slowly progressing through the streets of the cities and towns bearing a large float  depicting events of the last week of Jesus' life dressed from head to foot in robes of various colors. This merits some explanation.

Unfortunately, for many, this might be a frightening prospect, but let's remember that certain groups in the US started wearing similar (white) robes to hide their identities to commit atrocities, whereas in Spain the idea originated hundreds of years before the USA even existed as a country. The idea of each member dressing identically comes from the equality of the brotherhood. The hoods, often conical formations, are designed to represent the punishment that was reserved for convicted religious wrongdoers in the Middle Ages, and was contrived as a form of ridicule. Now, the brotherhoods use the hoods to show penitence and to admit to their own guilt in the death of Jesus. A far cry indeed from the despicable uses for which they were put to use much later in the USA.

Masies and Casas Rurales - The Country Inns of Spain

For many people, visiting Spain means staying in the city center, using their hotel as a base for exploring the culture and history of the region. There are others, however, who prefer an even more intimate experience. More and more people are discovering a new way of experiencing Spain, far from the rush of the city: Casas Rurales and Masies. The exact translation of these two concepts is difficult to capture, although in many respects they are best viewed as country inns, or rural bed and breakfasts. Not that they have to be in the middle of nowhere, mind you, so don’t get stuck on the idea of a farmhouse 3 hours from the nearest city. In fact, many of the best casas rurales are located in or near areas such as wine regions, national parks, quiet beaches, and other cultural treasures. A casa rural does not necessarily mean a simple stone farmhouse, either. The casas rurales of Spain are a great way of connecting with the Spanish culture and heritage, and for those people who take the opportunity it always provides some of the highlights of their visit.

Ideas for Semana Santa in Spain

As we close in on the 2011 edition of Semana Santa, we offer some suggestions for some different ideas on how to explore one of Spain's most interesting national festivals. We start, of course, in Seville and Malaga, where the entire city gets involved, and, if you've never been to one before, it's the most traditional and most intense way to discover the emotion and history of the region. But there's much more for the inquisitive traveler. Check out the processions in Granada or Cadiz in Andalucia for a change of scenery, or try Santiago de Compostela, a religious highlight all year round, or one of the areas that have obtained the "Fiesta de Interes Turistica internacional" like Zamora, Salamanca and Valladolid. City of Arts and Sciences - and yet another reason to visit Valencia

April in Spain - showers flowers and Semana Santa

March is almost over, and true to the old saying it's going out like a lamb, with sunny skies and temperatures climbing. All around spring is in bloom, and at The Spanish Touch we are looking forward to an April full of events. While the rain is almost inevitable at some point, so too are the flowers and book stalls that will line the streets of Barcelona for the festival of San Jordi, and with Semana Santa almost upon us we will reflect upon its traditions of around Spain. The Walls of Pamplona - another reason to visit

The name Pamplona usually invokes images of crowded streets and the running of the bulls, and the fiesta atmosphere of the San Fermin festival in July. But the city offers more than just the route of the Encierros. In fact, from now through June 30th, take advantage of the newly reopened walls of the Saint Bartholomew Fort, which are at the entrance to the Media Luna gardens right next to the Cathedral. The walls are another reason to visit the city, which is located about an hour and a half south of San Sebastian. And while you are there, dont forget to try the rose wines of Navarra!

The Route(s) of Don Quijote - La Mancha up close and personal

Everyone has heard of Don Quijote. And La Mancha's most famous windmill fighter has certainly brought more than a few well-read travelers to see his homeland. But did you know that there are, according to the La Mancha Tourist Board, actually 10 different Rutas de Don Quijote? From the walled city of Toledo to the windmills and picturesque town squares that dot the landscape, these routes offer a great way to get to know Spain and Don Quijote in greater depth.

Day trip from Malaga - Cueva del Tesoro

Less than 30 minutes east of where Pablo Picasso was born is the town of Rincon de la Victoria. On this side of the Costa del Sol you find fewer hotels and high-rises and more quaint towns and hidden surprises. One such surprise is the Cueva Del Tesoro, the only marine-formed cave which is completely visible all year round. Its name comes from the legend of 5 Moorish kings who hid their gold there.

Arenas bullring in Barcelona

For years the people of Barcelona have been expressing their desire to do away with bullfighting in their city. Last year a bill was passed banning bullfights throughout Catalunya. But the buildings themselves are spectacular. The Arenas bullring, unused for years, has been converted into a gorgeous new mall, which will open this Friday, March 25. The building conserves its original form and beauty.

Barcelona day tour with the Freys

Sunday's sunny weather provided a perfect backdrop for our Barcelona day tour. After meeting the Freys at their hotel, we began the tour at the Barcelona Cathedral. As they had visited the interior the day before, we skipped going in and began our route through the Gothic Quarter. Though the sun couldn't penetrate the narrow streets and plazas, the blue sky overhead and the freshness of the morning made walking the uncrowded streets a most pleasurable exercise. One of the highlights of the morning was definitely the "Trobada del Gegants" (pictured above), which had come from around Catalunya to strut their stuff through the old city.

After a tapas lunch we headed over to Sagrada Familia. The entrance line was fairly long but with our reservations we skipped right through. The exterior is still magnificent, but the enclosed central nave is, in the words of Mrs. Frey, "divine inspiration". Everything is so unique, so precise, that it almost seems impossible to discover everything at one shot. A visit up the towers for a magnificent view over the city and then back to the hotel to relax and enjoy the rest of the waning sunlight.

A thoroughly enjoyable day with thoroughly enjoyable people.

The Tramvia Blau -Barcelona's historic Trolley

One of the often overlooked aspects of Barcelona is one of its most visible: Tibidabo. On the top of the hill overlooking the entire city, the silhouette of the Sagrada Cor church and Norman Foster's imposing communications tower have become as much a part of the Barcelona landscape as the works of Gaudi, Domenech i Montaner and Puig i Caldafech. But it looks so far away, so far removed from the hustle and bustle of the old city, the Eixample, or even the bohemian plazas of Gracia. And yet, for the discerning traveler looking for something a little different, why not try the famous Tramvia Blau (Blue Trolley), the traditional and classic way of getting up the mountain. The Jerez Horse Fair

Andulusian horses have long been considered some of the finest in the world. And the "Feria de los Caballos" in Jerez de la Frontera attests to both the longevity and the well-deserved reputation of these magnificent animals. For more than 700 years the town has proudly displayed their beauty and agility. Not-to-be-missed is the Horse Parade, with horses and carriages ridden by riders in traditional costumes.

But the horses are only one of the attractions: Jerez opens its arms in true Andalusian fashion with "Casetas" - an amusement-park-like area filled with tent-houses with fantastic facades, Flamenco dancers, Bull fights, and of course, the local gastronomic delights.

Tango Festival in Granada - Unique ideas to enhance your time in Spain

Welcome to the Penedes - a day trip for wine lovers

When I picked up Fred and Paige at the hotel on our way south to wine country, the sun was shining and a promising day lay ahead of us. As we drove past Montserrat mountain, Fred pointed it out and noted that it is a really unique and how nice the visit to the monastery had been. We reached our first winery at 10 sharp, and Marta was ready for us. She took us through the history of the winery and why they are doing what they do before heading into the vineyards for some more detailed explanations and and a Q&A time. when the time came for the tasting, we took advantage of the sun and enjoyed our tasting outside (the puppy kept us company) as we talked about the wines and the processes.

Afterwards we headed over the hill to visit Rimarts and watch Ernest take us through the process of hand-crafted cava before we got to sample the finished product. The taste testing techniques were something different and really helped complete the experience.

As we headed back to Barcelona we talked about the wines and food in Barcelona and Catalunya in general, and I dropped them off at the hotel to enjoy the rest of their visit.

Hiking through Montserrat

Today we spent the day hiking through the upper hills of Montserrat. While most people visit Montserrat for its monastery and museum, today we took to the hills, literally. Just behind the monastery are some great walking paths (warning: climbing involved, we are on a mountain). Even in the slightly cold with the clouds pressing down towards the end of the day, we got to see some of the truly unique and breathtaking scenery that Montserrat offers those who wish to find it. I wholeheartedly recommend the experience to everyone, but especially to those who have already visited the monastery and now want the whole experience.

Las Fallas is Back - Let the Fireworks Begin in Valencia

It's that time of year again: from March 1 through March 20 the Las Fallas citywide celebration is underway in Valencia! As anyone who has ever been there can attest to, this is one of the truly can't-miss events of the year. Spain's third largest city literally lights up with fireworks, starting every day at 2:00 with the Mascletá and continuing with the ninots!

Skiing in Southern Spain

While we see the hopeful signs of spring approaching throughout Spain, the winter still offers an excellent chance to enjoy the snow throughout Spain. Today I want to recall that not only does Spain feature more than 400 km of the Pyrenees in the north, but there are also several good slopes close to Madrid and my personal favorite of Sierra Nevada in Granada. The Sierra Nevada is the highest mountain in southern Europe, and offers some great opportunities for winter fun. Casting its long shadow over the magnificent Alhambra in Granada, and less than 2 hours from Malaga on the coast, there is still time to get there and spend a day or two on the slopes to add adventure to your Spanish experience.

The Dia de Andalucia - A celebration of culture

February 28 is the Dia de Andalucia, celebrating Spain's largest autonomous region's history culture and people. And in true Andalucian style, the party goes on all weekend ll over the region. In Seville, the capital, the celebration will take place in the streets and parks of the city. Take a peek into the Flamenco and Sevillana Schools as they revel in their heritage. Check out the Royal Equestrian School in Jerez as it offers a rare Saturday performance of its horses. Or simply take in the wonderful hospitality of the people and enjoy some local delicacies on what promises to be another gorgeous weekend (looking at 70+ degrees on Saturday)!

A Truffle experience - and what happenned to the pig?

Last weekend was the 4th annual Trufa-Te Truffle Festival in the charming medieval city of Ainsa. After making the 4 hour drive out there we had the opportunity to witness how these gastronomic wonders can be used in tapas and full meals. Even though the rain picked up an hour after it started, the people still came out in force for the chance to sample tapas and buy truffles direct from the farmers. At 650 euros/kg, more than 7 kgs were sold in just 3 hours.

Afterwards, we had the chance to speak with one of the coordinators, and our interview was very enlightening. We learned, for example, that the traditional use of pigs to search for truffles has almost entirely been phased out. After doing some research we did find one farmer who still has a pig, although he doesn't use it for hunting truffles anymore. For one, the pigs tended to eat the truffles. Secondly, dogs are much easier to train and control. A good truffle dog is expensive. If the truffle itself is an expensive treat, the dogs that find them are just as highly regarded. One truffle hunter told us that he was offered over 10,000 euros for his, and he turned it down without even thinking twice!

In all a great weekend with truffles at the heart, and it's great to see the rural regions of Spain on display! The season is almost over, but we've already begun setting up next year's truffle experiences. We'll keep you up on our blog!

A Beautiful February Weekend Awaits

 The weather has been strange this winter. Colder than usual, then unseasonably warm, last week's bizarre weather in Barcelona which left the city under a thick fog for several days. But this weekend is promising. February holds a special place for me in my Spanish travels, as it was a warm day in February 9 years ago that The Spanish Touch began along the shores of the Mediterranean. This weekend, for those people lucky enough to be along the coastline, looks to be another great one. From the Forum Gastronomica in Girona, to the open house tours in Granada to special walking routes in Valencia and Malaga, the temperatures look great for a taste of spring in the air! 60+ degree temperatures just invite you to walk along the beach, stop for a cafe con leche  in the morning, or a glass of vino in the afternoon.

Whatever you choose to do, have a great weekend. We'll be at the Trufa-Te Festival in Ainsa this weekend, tasting some of the almost 8000 truffle-inspired tapas (in fact, we're going to try for as many as humanly possible), and washing it down with some great Somontano wine!

The world's loss - Santi Santamaria

Today the world lost one of the great traditional chefs: Santi Santamaria, of the three-star Raco de Can Fabes just outside of Barcelona, died today at the age of 53. RIP Mr. Santamaria.

Mr. Santamaria was a proponent of the traditional Catalan and Spanish cuisine, and while he was often at loggerheads with other chefs like Ferran Adria, his restaurants earned worldwide fame and respect.

Forum Gastronomic of Girona - February 20 - 23

Next Sunday from 11:00 through 8:000pm, Girona will be kicking off one of the biggest and most important gastronomy conventions in Europe. The event will take place at the Auditorium of Girona There are workshops and presentations throughout the day, with a presentation from the Roca brothers (of The Celler de Can Roca, 3 Michelin stars), as well as a food fair in the old market where you can sample the newest and most interesting creations of the world of creative and gourmet cuisine. Topics such as "Food and Health", "Sustainable Gastronomy" and forums for desserts, wines and foods. The entrance ticket is 5 euros, and to attend a forum or speech costs 3 euros. Workshops are 1.50 each.

Santa Eulalia - Barcelona's "Festa Major of Winter"

Tomorrow, Februry 12 marks the day of Saint Eulalia, the patron saint whose crypt can be found in the Cathedral of Barcelona. While many people in the city celebrate the Merced festival as the major saint day in September, there will be plenty to do and see as Barcelona celebrates the "Festa Major of Winter". The Gothic Quarter will be jumping with dancers, parades (featuring the traditional Gegants and capgrossos, and of course, the Castellers. The city celebrates it's patron in style, and a number of museums are joining in with free entry, making the event a great and inexpensive way to really get into the Catalan culture!

L'Estany - Eco- and walking tour friendly

Just over an hour north of Barcelona we find the lovely town of L'Estany and its 900 year old Romanesque monastery rests among the forest and along the eponymous lake.  With a collection of great hiking routes incorporating the history, culture and legends of the region, the town is a jewel just waiting to be discovered. And it has recently become the first town in Spain (and one of the first in Europe) which uses exclusively LED lighting for the entire town, thereby reducing drastically its energy consumption.

The XXVIII Theater Festival in Malaga

This wek is the last week to enjoy The 28th annual Festival del Teatro in Malaga. While long known for it's moniker as the capital of the Costa del Sol, Malaga has been emerging as a top destination for travelers interested in more than just the sun and beach lifestyle so famously popular down the road. Great restaurants, the Picasso Museum and an lively restaurant and nightlife scene are making more and more people aware of this long-overlooked diamond in the rough.

The Theater Festival is based at the Teatro Cervantes, just behind the Plaza de la Merced (where Picasso's birth house is located). Malaga has a long history of excellent theater productions, as native son Antonia Banderas can attest to. Take advantage of the shows and enjoy night out at the theater, maybe followed by some tapas and a glass of great Malaga Dulce wine!

This weekend in Barcelona - Petit Detall Art Expo in Gracia!

This Sunday in the charming barrio of Gracia, just a block off the main street that leads up to Park Guell, take the opportunity to stop in at the Cova de les Cultures (Cave of Cultures) for the "Sales" fair of arts and crafts from local professionals from around the city. The expo runs from 11 in the morning through 10 at night nonstop, so stop on by and get to know some of Barcelona's most interesting new artists and artisans at Carrer de l'Angel, 12, in Barcelona. February tours in Spain

February is a great month. Yes, it's still cold. But it's also filled with hints of spring, and a sense of blooming romance. And Spain is a romantic's dream.
